This velvet long coat marks new milestones for Rastah as we continue to experiment with fabric and production processes. The grey distressed viscose velvet fabric is uniquely block-printed with a new technique and pattern exclusive to Rastah ’ s studio. The design features a host of ‘ wild ’ imagery, creating a rich tapestry of flora and fauna and evoking the feeling of a lush Indian jungle. Pops of colour, added through hand embroidered detail work, add playfulness and depth to this chic and otherwise formal garment. The peacock is a particularly important regional motif and a longstanding feature of Rastah ’ s iconography. To us, the peacock is a perfect embodiment of the effortless regality and vibrance so easily associated with subcontinental aesthetics. The back panel of the coat features a large, colorful iteration of this subject, painstakingly hand printed by a single artisan, Aslam Mirza, a long term collaborator with the house. The block-printing is done in a way as to mimic the workstation of a block printer, which after numerous rounds of printing resembles a very disheveled and layered loom, encompassing months if not years of block-printing sessions within the fabric. The concept behind this design was to play with elements of chaos, uncertainty and layered feelings, so as to depict the destructive consequences of censorship on ideological narratives within a society. The coats silhouette consists of overlapping front panels, pleated detailing on the back, cuffed sleeves, a flared collar, and padded shoulder for added structure. Wool and khaddar are both hand-labour materials.
